44. 9. 1.

(91) Pācīna 1 –– Facing East 1

1. I heard thus. At one time the Blessed One lived in the monastery offered by Anāthapiṇḍika in Jeta’s Grove in Sāvatthi, and addressed the monks from there:

2. “Monks, just as river Ganges has a forward bend, slope, and incline, in the same manner the monk making much of the noble eightfold path has a bend, slope, and incline towards extinction. Monks, the monk developing and making much the Noble Eightfold Path in which manner, has a bend, slope, and incline towards extinction?

3. “Here, monks, the monk develops right view to drive out greed, hate, and delusion to the end, relying on seclusion, fading, ceasing, to give up with maturity ... re ... and the monk develops right concentration to drive out greed, hate, and delusion to the end, relying on seclusion, fading, ceasing, to give up with maturity. Monks, the monk developing and making much the Noble Eightfold Path in this manner has a bend, slope, and incline towards extinction.”

(92) Pācīna 2 –– Facing East 2

1. I heard thus. At one time the Blessed One lived in the monastery offered by Anāthapiṇḍika in Jeta’s Grove in Sāvatthi, and addressed the monks from there:

2. “Monks, just as river Yamunā has a forward bend, slope, and incline, in the same manner the monk making much the noble eightfold path has a bend, slope, and incline towards extinction. Monks, the monk developing and making much the Noble Eightfold Path in which manner, has a bend, slope, and incline towards extinction?

3. “Here, monks, the monk develops right view to drive out greed, hate, and delusion to the end, relying on seclusion, fading, ceasing to give up with maturity ... re ... and the monk develops right concentration to drive out greed, hate, and delusion to the end, relying on seclusion, fading, ceasing, to give up with maturity. Monks, the monk developing and making much the Noble Eightfold Path in this manner has a bend, slope, and incline towards extinction.”

Monks, the monk developing and making much the Noble Eightfold Path in which manner, has a bend, slope, and incline towards extinction?

3. “Here, monks, the monk develops right view to drive out greed, hate, and delusion to the end, relying on seclusion, fading, ceasing, to give up with maturity ...re. and the monk develops right concentration to drive out greed, hate, and delusion to the end, relying on seclusion, fading, ceasing, to give up with maturity Monks, the monk developing and making much the Noble Eightfold Path in this manner has a bend, slope, and incline towards extinction.”

2. “Monks, just as river Sarabhū has a forward bend, slope, and incline, in the same manner the monk making much of the noble eightfold bends, slopes, and inclines towards extinction. Monks, the monk developing and making much the Noble Eightfold Path in which manner, has a bend, slope, and incline towards extinction?

3. “Here, monks, the monk develops right view to drive out greed, hate, and delusion to the end, relying on seclusion, fading, ceasing, to give up with maturity ...re. ... and the monk develops right concentration to drive out greed, hate, and delusion to the end, relying on seclusion, fading, ceasing, to give up with maturity Monks, the monk developing and making much the Noble Eightfold Path in this manner has a bend, slope, and incline towards extinction.”

3. “Here, monks, the monk develops right view to drive out greed, hate, and delusion to the end, relying on seclusion, fading, ceasing, to give up with maturity ... re ... and the monk develops right concentration to drive out greed, hate, and delusion to the end, relying on seclusion, fading, ceasing, to give up with maturity. Monks, the monk developing and making much the Noble Eightfold Path in this manner has a bend, slope, and incline towards extinction.”

Monks, the monk developing and making much the Noble Eightfold Path in which manner, has a bend, slope, and incline towards extinction?

3. “Here, monks, the monk develops right view to drive out greed, hate, and delusion to the end, relying on seclusion, fading, ceasing, to give up with maturity ... re ... and the monk develops right concentration to drive out greed, hate, and delusion to the end, relying on seclusion, fading, ceasing, to give up with maturity. Monks, the monk developing and making much the Noble Eightfold Path in this manner bends, slopes, and inclines towards extinction.”
