29. 1. 1

1(1) Suddhikaṃ –– Purity

1. I heard thus. At one time the Blessed One was living in the monastery offered by Anāthapiṇḍika in Jeta’s grove in Sāvatthi.

2. The Blessed One addressed the monks from there:

3. “Monks, these four are the births of the foes of serpents. What four? Garulas born from eggs, born from a womb, born in moisture, and born spontaneously.”


29. 1. 2

(2) Haranti –– Carries Away

1. I heard thus. At one time the Blessed One was living in the monastery offered by Anāthapiṇḍika in Jeta’s grove in Sāvatthi.

2. The Blessed One addressed the monks from there:

3. “Monks, these four are the births of foes of serpents. What four? Monks, the foes of serpents born from eggs, born in a womb, born in moisture, and born spontaneously.

4. “Monks, the foes of the serpents born from eggs carry away serpents born from eggs. They do not carry away serpents born in wombs, born in moisture, or the spontaneously born.

5. “Monks, the foes of serpents born in a womb carry away the serpents born from eggs and the serpents born in wombs. They do not carry away serpents born in moisture or those born spontaneously.

6. “Monks, the foes of serpents born in moisture carry away the serpents born from eggs, the serpents born in wombs, and the serpents born in moisture. They do not carry away serpents born spontaneously.

7. “Monks, the foes of serpents born spontaneously carry away the serpents born from eggs, the serpents born in wombs, the serpents born in moisture, and serpents born spontaneously.

8. “Monks, these four are the foes of serpents.”

Notes. Supanna are explained as Garulas a kind of fairy birds. foes of the serpents.


29. 1. 3. Dvayakāri I –– Acting in Two Ways I

1. I heard thus. At one time the Blessed One was living in the monastery offered by Anāthapiṇḍika in Jeta’s grove in Sāvatthi.

2. Then a certain monk approached the Blessed One, worshipped, and sat on a side.

3. Sitting, that monk said to the Blessed One: “Venerable sir, how is it that a certain one, after death, is born with the foes of serpents born from eggs?”

4. “Here, monk, a certain one acts in two ways by body, speech, and mind, he learns that the foes of serpents born from eggs enjoy long life, beauty, and much pleasantness.

5. “It occurs to him: ‘I should be born with the foes of serpents born from eggs.’ After death he is born with the foes of serpents born from eggs.

6. “Monk, this is the reason for a certain one to be born with the foes of serpents born from eggs.” ... re ...

Dānupakara I, II, III, and IV –– By Giving Gifts I, II, III, and IV

(The next forty suttas consist of four groups of ten suttas. Each sutta describes a type of gift-giving. The group of ten suttas is repeated for the foes of serpents that are egg-born [aṇḍaja], womb-born [jalābuja], moisture-born [saṃsedaja], and spontaneously-born [opapātika].)


Dānupakara I –– By Giving Gifts I

29. 1. 7. Annadāyaka aṇḍaja –– Egg-born Donor of Eatables

1. I heard thus. At one time the Blessed One was living in the monastery offered by Anāthapiṇḍika in Jeta’s grove in Sāvatthi.

2. Then a certain monk approached the Blessed One, worshipped, and sat on a side.

3. Sitting, that monk said to the Blessed One: “Venerable sir, how is it that a certain one, after death, is born with the foes of serpents born from eggs?”

4. “Here, monk, a certain one acts in two ways by body, speech, and mind. He learns that foes of serpents born from eggs enjoy long life, beauty, and much pleasantness.

5. “Then it occurs to him, ‘May I be born with the foes of serpents born from eggs, after death.’

6. “He gives eatables. At the breakup of the body, after death, he is born with the foes of serpents born from eggs.

7. “Monk, this is the reason for a certain one to be born with the foes of serpents born from eggs, after death.”
