[166] มหาปเทส 4^๑ (ที่อ้างอิงข้อใหญ่, หลักใหญ่สำหรับอ้างเพื่อสอบสวนเทียบเคียง หมวดที่ 1 ว่าด้วยหลักทั่วไป - great authorities; principal references or citations)
       1. หากมีภิกษุกล่าวว่า ข้าพเจ้าได้สดับรับมาเฉพาะพระพักตร์ของพระผู้มีพระภาค ว่า นี้เป็นธรรม นี้เป็นวินัย นี้เป็นสัตถุสาสน์ (A monk might say: “Face to face with the Blessed One did I hear this; face to face with him did I receive this. This is the Doctrine, this is the Discipline, this is the Master's teaching.”)
       2. หากมีภิกษุกล่าวว่า ในอาวาสชื่อโน้น มีสงฆ์อยู่ พร้อมด้วยพระเถระ พร้อมด้วยปาโมกข์ ข้าพเจ้าได้สดับรับมาเฉพาะหน้าสงฆ์นั้นว่า นี้เป็นธรรม นี้เป็นวินัย นี้เป็นสัตถุสาสน์ (A monk might say: “In such and such a monastery resides an Order together with an elder monk, together with a leader. Face to face with that Order did I hear this; . . .)
       3. หากมีภิกษุกล่าวว่า ในอาวาสชื่อโน้น มีภิกษุผู้เป็นพระเถระอยู่จำนวนมาก เป็นพหูสูต ถึงอาคม (คือชำนาญในพุทธพจน์ทั้ง 5 นิกาย) ทรงธรรม ทรงวินัย ทรงมาติกา ข้าพเจ้าได้สดับรับมาเฉพาะหน้าพระเถระเหล่านั้นว่า นี้เป็นธรรม นี้เป็นวินัย นี้เป็นสัตถุสาสน์ (A monk might say: “In such and such a monastery reside a great number of elder monks, widely learned, versed in the Collections, experts on the Doctrine, experts on the Discipline, experts on the Summaries, In the presence of those monks did I hear this; . . .)
       4. หากมีภิกษุกล่าวว่า ในอาวาสชื่อโน้น มีภิกษุผู้เป็นพระเถระอยู่รูปหนึ่ง เป็นพหูสูต ถึงอาคม ทรงธรรม ทรงวินัย ทรงมาติกา ข้าพเจ้าได้สดับรับมาเฉพาะหน้าพระเถระรูปนั้นว่า นี้เป็นธรรม นี้เป็นวินัย นี้เป็นสัตถุสาสน์ (A monk might say: “In such and such a monastery resides an elder monk of wide learning. . . .)

       เธอทั้งหลาย ยังไม่พึงชื่นชม ยังไม่พึงคัดค้านคำกล่าวของผู้นั้น พึงเรียนบทและพยัญชนะ (ทั้งข้อความและถ้อยคำ) เหล่านั้นให้ดีแล้ว พึงสอบดูในสูตรเทียบดูในวินัย (The words of that monk are neither to be welcomed nor scorned, the words and syllables thereof are to be studied thoroughly, laid beside the Discourses and compared with the Discipline.)

       ก. ถ้าบทและพยัญชนะเหล่านั้น สอบลงในสูตรก็ไม่ได้ เทียบเข้าในวินัยก็ไม่ได้ พึงลงสันนิษฐานว่า นี้มิใช่ดำรัสของพระผู้มีพระภาคแน่นอน ภิกษุนี้ (สงฆ์นั้นพระเถระเหล่านั้น พระเถระรูปนั้น) ถือไว้ผิด พึงทิ้งเสีย (If, when laid beside the Discourses and compared with the Discipline, these words and syllables lie not along with the Discourses and agree not with the Discipline then you nay come to the conclusion; Surely this is not the word of the Blessed One, and it has been wrongly grasped by that monk. Then reject it.)
       ข. ถ้าบทและพยัญชนะเหล่านั้น สอบลงในสูตรก็ได้ เทียบเข้าในวินัยก็ได้ พึงลงสันนิษฐานว่า นี้เป็นดำรัสของพระผู้มีพระภาคแน่แท้ ภิกษุนี้ (สงฆ์นั้น พระเถระเหล่านั้น พระเถระรูปนั้น) รับมาด้วยดี (If . . . they lie along with the Discourses and agree with the Discipline . . . Surely this is the word of the Blessed One . . .)

       โดยสรุป คือ การยกข้ออ้างหรือหลักฐาน 4 (the four principal appeals to authority) คือ
       1. พุทธาปเทส (ยกเอาพระพุทธเจ้าขึ้นอ้าง - the appeal to the Enlightened One as authority)
       2. สังฆาปเทส (ยกเอาพระสงฆ์ขึ้นอ้าง - the appeal to a community of monks or an Order as authority)
       3. สัมพหุลัตเถราปเทส (ยกเอาพระเถระจำนวนมากขึ้นอ้าง - the appeal to a number of elders as authority)
       4. เอกเถราปเทส (ยกเอาพระเถระรูปหนึ่งขึ้นอ้าง - the appeal to a single elder as authority)
